Backlights are positioned behind objects to create a silhouette.  This technique is excellent for creating contrast on edges, detection of holes or voids in an object or to separate transparent from opaque.

Edge type backlights use LED’s pointing inwards from the edges of the light.  This injects light into the special diffuser producing a very uniform output (+/- 5% from centre to edge). This type of backlight is also very thin (typically 8-10mm).  These types of backlight are not the most intense and they have a relatively thick frame around the edges when compared to other types.
