Large Area Type
Alternatives
Backlights are positioned behind objects to create a silhouette. This technique is excellent for creating contrast on edges, detection of holes or voids in an object or to separate transparent from opaque.
Large area type backlights use LED’s directly behind the diffuser the same as array type backlights and therefore have similar intensity and uniformity characteristics (very high intensity and typical uniformity of +/- 10%). Large area backlights have to be constructed with great care regarding thermal management and uniformity. Excessive heat can be generated at the centre of large arrays of LEDs. Transferring this heat efficiently is a priority in the design.
Large area backlights can often be positioned at greater distances behind objects, whilst maintaining coverage – this technique offers much improved performance when compared to working at close distances.
